UEFA called "strongly" on
Tuesday to its 55 member associations, with which it met via videoconference,
to finish the 2019-20 leagues and cups, but assured that it will hear
"special cases". The vast majority of the championships have been
suspended since March due to the coronavirus
pandemic and it is assumed that their resumption will always depend on what the
respective governments decide according to the health authorities.
UEFA, who will meet with the leagues this
Wednesday and whose executive committee will hold a meeting this Thursday,
always with the end of the season as the central theme, presented an update on
Tuesday regarding the options on the resumption of the season.
These options are being studied jointly with the two working
groups that were created for this purpose in mid-March. Aleksander Ceferin,
UEFA president, reiterated on Monday that he believes it is necessary that the
season be completed "even if it is behind closed doors."
Always according to the statement released by UEFA itself, in the course of its
meeting with the federations, various calendar options were presented that
include both the matches of national and international competitions at club
level. Later UEFA assured that any decision on these issues will be announced
after the Executive Committee on
Thursday.
UEFA strongly recommended that national league and cup
competitions be terminated, but some special cases will be heard once the
guidelines for participation in European
competitions have been developed, should a league be canceled.
Finally, the financing of national federations through the
UEFA Hat Trick program was also discussed. The body that governs European
football itself insisted on its commitment to meet payments to member federations,
as planned.
